Yacht Charter French Riviera 2026 — The Complete Guide

The Côte d'Azur. Where modern yacht charter was invented.

The brief

The French Riviera is the historic capital of yacht charter, and in 2026 it remains the most concentrated superyacht cruising ground on the planet. From St Tropez to Monaco is 50 nautical miles, and inside that stretch you have Cannes, Antibes, Cap Ferrat, Villefranche, Beaulieu and Eze — every name on the brochure, every harbour you've seen on a film set.

What surprises first-time charterers is how short the Riviera actually is. Most charters base out of Cannes or Antibes (where the yachts winter) and trace the same coastline that yachts have traced since the 1920s. The substance of a Riviera charter is dinners, anchorage swims, day trips ashore — not long sailing legs.

Add Corsica (and on shorter crossings, the Italian coast — Portofino, the Cinque Terre) and the Riviera doubles as a launchpad for the whole Ligurian Sea. The premium for chartering here is real, but so is the polish: berths are professional, restaurants are world-class, and crew standards are the highest in the Mediterranean.

  • The Riviera fleet

More 30m+ yachts winter here than anywhere else. The catalogue is unmatched.

  • Shore-led nights

Every anchorage is 20 minutes by tender from a Michelin restaurant.

  • Easy access

Nice Côte d'Azur is the second-busiest private-jet hub in Europe after London.

  • Corsica as the wild card

12 hours south and the Riviera becomes the Mediterranean's most unspoiled cruising ground.

When to go

Best time for yacht charter on the French Riviera

The Riviera season runs May to September. The two events that shape pricing and traffic are the Cannes Film Festival (mid-May) and the Monaco Grand Prix (late May) — both are exceptional weeks but charter inventory dries up six months ahead. July and August are peak weather; September is the connoisseur's choice — water still 24°C, evenings cooler, terraces emptier. The Yacht Show in Monaco (late September) closes the season formally.

Where to drop anchor

Key anchorages & quiet finds

  • Cannes Bay
    Île Sainte-Marguerite (Cannes)

Pine-fringed island opposite Cannes. La Guérite restaurant runs a tender service.

Local tip: Anchor on the south side for shelter from the Mistral.

  • St Tropez
    Pampelonne Bay (St Tropez)

The most-anchored bay in the Mediterranean. Beach clubs all run tender services.

  • Antibes
Plage de la Garoupe (Cap d'Antibes)

Sandy seabed, sheltered from the west. Eden Roc is the lunch destination.

  • Cap Ferrat
    Villefranche-sur-Mer

Vast natural amphitheatre. The deepest natural harbour on the Riviera.

  • Cap Ferrat
    Paloma Beach (Cap Ferrat)

Famous beach club; reserve weeks ahead for lunch.

  • Corsica
    Scandola Nature Reserve (Corsica)

UNESCO-protected. Anchoring restricted — pass through, lunch in Girolata next door.

  • Corsica
    Girolata (Corsica)

No road access; reachable only by boat or 3-hour hike. Lunch at La Cabane du Berger.

  • Sardinia
Cala di Volpe (Sardinia, short hop south)

Riviera fleet often crosses to Sardinia for August week. Pevero, Liscia di Vacca, Romazzino.

Insider notes

  • Saint-Florent (Cap Corse)

Vermentino wineries, granite coves, an Italian feel — Corsica's quiet north.

  • La Réserve de la Mala (Cap d'Ail)

A pebble cove between Monaco and Cap Ferrat reachable only by tender or 200-step staircase.

  • Pinarello (East Corsica)

Sandy beach, Genoese tower, three restaurants. Like Sardinia without the prices.

  • Lunch at La Vague d'Or (St Tropez)

Three-star, on the beach, accessible by tender from any Pampelonne anchorage.

  • Off-week timing

The 10 days between the end of Cannes Film Festival and Monaco GP — flat sea, empty bays, season fully open.

Choosing your yacht

What kind of yacht works best here

  • Motor yacht
Best for: The default — 80% of Riviera charters

The Riviera is motor yacht country. Short legs, late dinners, beach clubs, marinas with full services. 24–40m is the sweet spot.

  • Superyacht
Best for: Corsica, Sardinia, longer ranges

Riviera superyacht inventory is the deepest in the world. 40–80m yachts berth at Monaco, IYCA Antibes, Port Camille Rayon (Golfe Juan), Cannes Vieux Port.

  • Sailing yacht
Best for: Riviera-Corsica crossings, performance sailing

A growing 30–50m crewed sailing fleet (Perini, Wally, Baltic) bases out of Antibes. The Mistral makes for serious sailing west of St Tropez.

  • Catamaran
Best for: Smaller groups, Corsica focus

Crewed 60–80ft catamarans are an emerging Riviera option, particularly for Corsica-heavy itineraries.

  • Day boat
Best for: Riviera home-base trips, no overnight

10–14m day boats from Monaco or Cannes are perfect supplements to a hotel-based stay.

Transparent pricing

Budget ranges

The Riviera is the most expensive charter region in the world per metre. 2026 prices reflect post-pandemic inventory tightness. All-in costs roughly double the base rate once APA, French VAT (20%), berths and tips are added.

  • 01Crewed motor yacht (24–30m)€55,000 – €130,000

Crew of 4–6. The Riviera standard.

  • 02Superyacht (30–40m)€150,000 – €380,000

Crew of 6–10, chef, beach club.

  • 03Superyacht (40–60m)€400,000 – €1.2m

    Full crew, helipad on many.

  • 04Superyacht (60m+)€1.2m – €3.5m+

Crew of 18–30, ocean range, beach clubs, often submarine.

  • 05Day boat / hotel-based€8,000 – €25,000

10–14m day boats with skipper for shorter trips out of a Cannes/Monaco hotel base.

French VAT is 20% on EU waters charter — significantly higher than Italy, Greece or Croatia. Many Riviera charters minimise VAT by including Italian (Sardinia, Portofino) or Corsican time in the itinerary. Monaco berthing in July/August is the most expensive in Europe (€3,000+/night for a 50m).

Practicalities

Getting there & logistics

  • Where to embark

Cannes Vieux Port, Antibes (IYCA / Port Vauban), Monaco (Port Hercule), St Tropez (Vieux Port + Marina IGY).

  • Getting there

Nice Côte d'Azur is the air hub. Private jet at Nice, Cannes-Mandelieu or Saint-Tropez-La Môle. Helicopters direct Nice → Monaco in 7 minutes.

  • VAT and structuring

20% French VAT on charter base. Itineraries that visit Italy or Corsica (still France, but treated more flexibly under TVA Forfait rules) can reduce effective VAT — the charter agency structures this.

  • Berthing reality

Monaco, Antibes and Cannes are oversubscribed in summer. Most yachts anchor in bays and tender ashore; a permanent berth is a luxury negotiated months ahead.

FAQ

Common questions

  • How much does a Riviera yacht charter cost?

Realistically €100,000+ per week all-in for a 30m crewed motor yacht in July/August. Lower in May or September, higher for superyachts.

  • Cannes Film Festival or Monaco GP — can I still get a yacht?

Yes, but you book 12+ months ahead and pay 30–50% premiums. Both are 'event charters' — minimum 4-night, often with mandatory inclusion of show packages.

  • Why is French VAT so high?

20% applies to EU-waters charter from a French base. Itineraries that include time outside French waters (Italy, Corsica with stop-overs in international waters) can lower the effective rate.

  • Should I include Corsica?

Yes if you have 7+ days. Corsica is the wild contrast to the Riviera and turns a polished week into a memorable one.

  • Is Monaco worth basing in?

For a 2–3 night trip, yes — direct heli from Nice, world-class restaurants, easy berth access. For a week, base in Cannes or Antibes and visit Monaco mid-charter.

The Riviera is the charter destination where the boat is the point. Stay close to shore, dine well, take Corsica as the wild card, and accept that the Mistral and the marina politics are part of the deal. There is a reason this coast invented modern yacht charter.
