Cruising South Central America: when to go and where to anchor
Best time
The primary charter season runs from December to April during the regional dry season, bringing lower humidity and consistent sunshine. Strong, gusty Papagayo winds affect northern Costa Rica during these months. From May to November, the green season brings higher rainfall, calmer regional winds, and afternoon thunderstorms, with October typically seeing the heaviest precipitation. Peak demand occurs over Christmas, New Year, and February, whilst the shoulder months of November and May offer quieter cruising grounds.
Practical tips
- Fly into Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) or Panama City (PTY); Marina Papagayo in Guanacaste is about 30 minutes from Liberia airport.
- Cruising permits and national park passes are mandatory for marine reserves such as Coiba National Park and must be secured before dropping anchor.
- Provision fully at primary departure ports, as outlying anchorages in the Gulf of Chiriquí and Osa Peninsula offer no shore-side supply options.
