Cruising the Maldives: when to go and where to anchor
Best time
The northeast monsoon from December to April brings dry weather, low rainfall, and steady moderate winds, marking the primary charter period with peak demand over Christmas and New Year. May to November brings the southwest monsoon, characterised by higher humidity, increased rainfall, and rougher seas. May and November serve as transitional shoulder months. Calmer lagoon conditions and clearer underwater visibility occur during the dry winter season.
Practical tips
- Cruising permits are required for travel between atolls, and crewed yachts must obtain designated clearances before anchoring near private resort islands or marine reserves.
- Most fresh provisioning occurs in Malé prior to departure; options on inhabited local islands are limited primarily to basic staples and locally caught fish.
- Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is strictly required when visiting inhabited local islands, and personal alcohol consumption is confined entirely to the yacht.
