Caribbean Yacht Charter — Season & Events Guide

The Caribbean charter season is the inverse of the Mediterranean: late November to mid-May, peaking around the Christmas-New Year week and again at Easter. Trade winds (15–25 knots from the east) are reliable; the islands separate by geography into the Lesser Antilles (Antigua, St Barths, St Martin), the Virgin Islands (BVI and USVI), and the Grenadines south. Hurricane season (June–November) closes the calendar — most yachts cross to the Med for European summer.

Charter recommendations

Best base destinations

St Maarten (Simpson Bay Lagoon and Sint Maarten Yacht Club) for Lesser Antilles departures; St Thomas (Yacht Haven Grande) for BVI and USVI; English Harbour (Antigua) for southern Caribbean and regatta circuits.

Recommended yacht size

BVI/USVI: 25–40m catamaran or motor yacht — shallow draft an advantage. Lesser Antilles: 40m+ motor yacht. St Barths NYE: 50m+ is the social baseline.

Itinerary template (7 nights, BVI)

Tortola → Norman Island → Peter Island → Cooper Island → Virgin Gorda (Bitter End, The Baths) → Anegada → Jost Van Dyke → Tortola.

Itinerary template (7 nights, St Barths circuit)

St Martin → St Barths (3 nights) → Anguilla → St Kitts → Nevis → back via St Barths.

Avoid

BVI during US Spring Break (mid-March) — fully booked. St Barths the week of Christmas Day — extreme overbooking, anchor space limited.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best month to charter in the Caribbean?
Mid-February to mid-March (settled trade winds, lower density than NYE) and early-to-mid January (best value after Christmas peak).
When is St Barths peak season?
December 22 through January 5 is the most overbooked week of the global yacht calendar. Bucket Regatta (mid-March) is the second peak.
Is the Caribbean closed in summer?
Effectively yes. Hurricane season runs June through November; insurance and operational constraints close most charter activity. Yachts reposition to the Mediterranean.
Can I combine St Barths and the BVI on one charter?
Not easily — they are 300+ nm apart and separated by open ocean. Most clients pick one or the other per trip.
