Cinque Terre to Portofino Gems

The Ligurian sun warms the deck as you depart from La Spezia, the scent of salt and pine filling the air. Your journey traces the iconic coastline north, where candy-coloured villages cling impossibly to sheer cliffs that plunge into the sapphire sea. Each day reveals a new gem, from the rustic charm of the Cinque Terre's hidden coves and terraced vineyards to the polished glamour of Portofino's world-famous harbour. This is the Italian Riviera, revealed in its most exclusive and intimate form from the privileged perspective of your private yacht.

  1. DAY 01

    Portovenere & Palmaria Island

After embarking at Porto Mirabello, a short cruise delivers you to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Portovenere. The bold 'palazzata' of tall, slender houses lines the waterfront, watched over by the imposing Doria Castle. At the peninsula's end, the striped Church of St. Peter sits defiantly on the rocks, guarding the entrance to the 'Gulf of Poets'.

    • Tender to Byron's Grotto, a craggy sea cave named for the poet.
    • Explore the medieval Doria Castle for commanding views of the gulf.
    • Hike the trails of Palmaria Island, directly opposite the village.
    • Walk the narrow 'caruggi' alleyways of the old town centre.

The yacht anchors off the first of the five villages, Riomaggiore, its steep, terraced vineyards cascading down to a tiny harbour. A short cruise along the coast brings you to Manarola, a jumble of bright houses clinging to a dark rock promontory. From the water, the scale and audacity of these settlements is truly apparent.

    • Tender ashore to walk up Riomaggiore's steep main street, Via Colombo.
    • Swim from the yacht's platform in the clear water between the villages.
    • Hike a section of the vineyard trail above Manarola.

    Corniglia & Vernazza

Cruise past Corniglia, the only Cinque Terre village without direct sea access, perched high on its cliff-top bastion. You arrive in Vernazza, often considered the most picturesque village, with its natural harbour and colourful piazza. The scene is one of constant motion, with fishing boats and tenders weaving a path towards the waterfront.

    • Tender into Vernazza's small, protected harbour.
    • Climb the Belforte Tower of the Doria Castle for a postcard view.
    • Visit the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia on the water's edge.

Its long, sandy Fegina beach is dotted with bright orange and green umbrellas, while the 'Il Gigante' statue, a huge sculpture of Neptune, is carved into the cliff. The old and new towns are connected by a short pedestrian tunnel, each with a distinct character.

    • Swim and relax on Fegina Beach, the only proper sandy beach in the Cinque Terre.
