A Thailand yacht charter with Blue Ocean Club is an immersion into a world of sensory wonder and unparalleled luxury. Days unfold at the pace of the sea: long swims off the platform, lunch at a beach club where your concierge has held the best table, an afternoon cruise to a quieter anchorage, cocktails on the bow as the light softens. The captain rewrites tomorrow's plan based on tonight's weather and your party's mood.

We work with a small list of crewed yacht charter Thailand operators we know personally — captains we have cruised with, chefs whose tasting menus we have eaten, stewardesses who know your children's names by the end of day one. The result is a charter that feels less like a booking and more like a private invitation.

Top cruising areas & highlights of Thailand.

A handful of signature experiences that define a charter on this coast.

01

Phang Nga Bay

A UNESCO World Heritage site and a geological marvel, famous for its hundreds of sheer limestone karsts rising from emerald waters. This protected bay's main allure is exploring hidden lagoons ('hongs') by kayak and visiting the iconic Ko Tapu (James Bond Island). Its calm, sheltered waters make it a perfect, all-weather cruising ground accessible directly from Phuket.

02

The Phi Phi Islands

This stunning archipelago is the jewel of the Andaman Sea. The larger Phi Phi Don offers vibrant nightlife, excellent restaurants, and beautiful anchorages, while the uninhabited Phi Phi Leh is home to the breathtaking, rejuvenated Maya Bay. The combination of dramatic cliffs, white-sand beaches, and vibrant snorkeling spots makes it an essential stop on any Thai charter itinerary.

03

Similan & Surin Islands

Open only from November to May, these protected national parks are a diver's pilgrimage site. Consistently ranked among the world's top dive destinations, they boast unparalleled water clarity, massive underwater granite boulders, and a staggering biodiversity including manta rays and whale sharks. A charter here is a commitment to a pure, unrivaled oceanic experience, far from the mainland crowds.

04

Krabi Coastline & Railay Beach

Stretching south of Phang Nga, the Krabi coast features even more dramatic cliff formations and pristine beaches. The highlight is Railay, a peninsula accessible only by boat, famed for its world-class rock climbing, laid-back vibe, and stunning Phra Nang Beach. Anchor here for adventurous activity or simply to soak in one of Thailand's most spectacular coastal vistas.

05

Ang Thong National Marine Park

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, this archipelago of 42 islands is a miniature version of Phang Nga Bay. Its name means 'Golden Bowl', and it offers fantastic kayaking, hiking to breathtaking viewpoints, and a visit to the hidden 'Emerald Lake' (Thale Nai). As a protected area, it provides dozens of secluded, pristine anchorages perfect for those exploring the Koh Samui region.

## The Soul of Southeast Asian Yachting Thailand, the ‘Land of Smiles’, is a destination that transcends mere geography; it is an experience, a feeling, a vibrant tapestry of culture, nature, and exquisite luxury. Aboard your private yacht, this magical kingdom unfurls before you not as a tourist map, but as a privileged journey into its very heart. Imagine waking to the sight of a lone sea eagle soaring between limestone karsts in Phang Nga Bay, the silence broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the hull. Picture an afternoon spent diving into the crystalline depths of the Similan Islands, followed by a sunset cocktail on a deserted beach, the sand still warm from the sun. This is the promise of a Thailand charter: a seamless blend of exhilarating adventure and serene tranquility, curated to your every desire. From the world-renowned cruising grounds of the Andaman Sea to the vibrant, cosmopolitan islands of the Gulf of Thailand, the country offers a diversity of experiences that few destinations can match. Here, ancient traditions exist in harmony with modern sophistication. You can explore sacred Buddhist temples in the morning and dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant in the evening. You can haggle with a smile in a bustling local market for handmade crafts and later retreat to the sublime comfort of your yacht for a traditional Thai massage on the sundeck. Your Blue Ocean Club crew, experts in both five-star service and local knowledge, are the keys that unlock these hidden treasures, ensuring every moment is as authentic as it is unforgettable. ## Why Charter a Yacht in Thailand? Choosing Thailand for your luxury yacht charter is a decision to embrace unparalleled variety and beauty. The reasons are as numerous and compelling as the islands themselves. **1. Otherworldly Scenery:** The defining feature, particularly of the Andaman coast, is the staggering seascape of limestone karsts. These majestic, sheer cliffs, draped in green foliage, rise vertically from the turquoise waters. They hide secret lagoons, or 'hongs', accessible only by kayak at low tide, and frame some of the world's most breathtaking beaches. The natural beauty is not just dramatic; it's interactive and endlessly explorable. **2. A Dual Cruising Paradise:** Thailand offers two distinct and world-class cruising regions with opposing seasons, effectively creating a year-round yachting destination. The Andaman Sea, with Phuket as its hub, is a globally celebrated winter destination. Come the summer months, the Gulf of Thailand, centered around Koh Samui, offers calm seas and sunny skies, providing a perfect alternative. **3. World-Class Diving and Snorkeling:** The waters here are a diver's dream. The Similan and Surin Islands are consistently ranked among the top ten dive destinations globally, offering incredible visibility, vibrant coral reefs, and a chance to encounter whale sharks and manta rays. Even for casual snorkelers, the waters around the Phi Phi Islands and Koh Racha teem with colourful marine life, easily accessible from your yacht's swim platform. **4. Cuisine as a Destination:** Thai food is a global phenomenon, but to experience it here, prepared with the freshest local ingredients by your private chef, is a revelation. From fiery southern curries and complex royal court recipes to simple, perfect grilled seafood enjoyed on a secluded beach, every meal is an adventure for the palate. The cuisine is a core part of the cultural journey. **5. The Culture of Hospitality:** Thai culture is rooted in a gentle, welcoming spirit. The famous 'Land of Smiles' is no marketing slogan; it's a tangible warmth you feel from the moment you arrive. This philosophy of gracious hospitality is embodied by your yacht's crew, who provide intuitive, discreet, and deeply personal service. **6. Unrivaled Value for Luxury:** Thailand offers an exceptional standard of luxury that represents remarkable value. The quality of the yachts, the professionalism of the crews, the exquisite cuisine, and the sheer scope of available experiences rival any top-tier charter destination in the world, often at a more accessible price point. ## Geography and Principal Cruising Grounds Thailand's extensive coastline is divided into two primary cruising areas, each with a unique character and appeal. ### The Andaman Sea (West Coast) This is the quintessential Thai yachting experience, famous for its dramatic scenery and crystalline waters. Based out of the international hub of Phuket, it offers hundreds of miles of stunning coastline and over 130 islands to explore. * **Phang Nga Bay:** Immediately northeast of Phuket, this is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a geological wonder. The bay is peppered with over 40 limestone islands and karsts, including the iconic Ko Tapu ('James Bond Island'). The main attraction is exploring the 'hongs' (Thai for 'room'), which are collapsed cave systems creating hidden, interior lagoons accessible via sea kayak or tender. The calm, protected waters make it an ideal cruising ground in any weather. * **Krabi & the Phi Phi Islands:** South of Phang Nga, the Krabi province coastline is arguably even more spectacular. The twin peninsulas of Railay Beach, accessible only by boat, are a rock-climber's paradise framed by stunning beaches. Further south lie the famous Phi Phi Islands. While Phi Phi Don offers a vibrant hub of restaurants, bars, and shops, the uninhabited Phi Phi Leh is home to the legendary Maya Bay ('The Beach'), now a model of ecological restoration with pristine, protected sands and waters. * **The Similan and Surin Islands:** Lying further northwest from Phuket in the open Andaman Sea, these remote archipelagos are national parks and world-renowned diving sanctuaries. Open only from November to May to protect their fragile ecosystem, they offer gin-clear water, spectacular underwater rock formations, and abundant marine megafauna. A charter here is for the serious ocean lover and requires a multi-day commitment. ### The Gulf of Thailand (East Coast) Offering a different but equally compelling charter experience, the Gulf coast is best visited during the summer months when the Andaman Sea experiences its monsoon season. * **Koh Samui Archipelago:** The hub of the Gulf, Koh Samui is a sophisticated island with luxury resorts, spas, and fine dining. It serves as the perfect base to explore the surrounding islands. Koh Phangan, its neighbour, is famous for its lively beach parties but also possesses wonderfully secluded northern beaches and a burgeoning wellness scene. Koh Tao, the smallest of the trio, is a diver's mecca, known as a 'turtle island' with fantastic, easy-access dive sites. * **Ang Thong National Marine Park:** An archipelago of 42 islands rising from the sea, Ang Thong was the inspiration for Alex Garland's novel 'The Beach'. It's a miniature Phang Nga Bay, with stunning viewpoints, a hidden emerald lake (Talay Nai), and numerous quiet coves perfect for kayaking, snorkeling, and anchoring in serene seclusion. ## Climate and Charter Seasons Thailand's tropical climate is dictated by the monsoon, creating two distinct seasons and making it a year-round yachting destination if you choose your location wisely. * **The Dry Season (Northeast Monsoon / Peak Season): November – April** This is the prime time for chartering in the **Andaman Sea (Phuket, Krabi, Similans)**. The northeast monsoon brings dry, sunny weather, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures. Humidity is lower, and clear skies are the norm. Winds are typically light to moderate from the northeast, providing excellent sailing conditions and calm anchorages on the western sides of the islands. This is the busiest season, so advance booking is essential. * **The Green Season (Southwest Monsoon): May – October** During these months, the southwest monsoon affects the Andaman Sea, bringing stronger winds, higher humidity, intermittent rain showers (usually in the afternoon), and rougher sea conditions. While charters are still possible and the landscape is exceptionally lush and green, anchorages must be chosen carefully on the sheltered eastern sides of islands. However, this same season is the ideal time to charter in the **Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan)**. The high spine of the peninsula protects the Gulf from the worst of the monsoon, resulting in calmer seas, plenty of sunshine, and less rainfall than the west coast, making it a superb summer charter destination. ## Signature Experiences Aboard Your Yacht A Thai charter is a canvas for a myriad of unique experiences, tailored by your crew to your preferences. * **Exploring 'Hongs' by Kayak:** The silent glide into a hidden, sun-dappled lagoon in Phang Nga Bay, paddling through a low sea arch as your voice echoes in the stillness, is a core memory of any Thai charter. * **Private Beach Barbecue:** Your crew will find a deserted stretch of sand and, as sunset paints the sky, set up a magical dining experience. Think tiki torches, linen tablecloths, and a feast of perfectly grilled local lobster, tiger prawns, and fresh fish, all enjoyed with your feet in the sand. * **Diving the Similan Islands:** For certified divers, descending onto Richelieu Rock or Elephant Head Rock is a bucket-list experience. The sheer density and variety of marine life, from tiny ghost pipefish to majestic whale sharks, is staggering. * **Traditional Thai Massage on Deck:** Imagine the gentle sea breeze, the rhythmic kneading of a skilled therapist, and the soothing scent of lemongrass oil as all tension melts away. An on-deck massage is the ultimate expression of Thai wellness and relaxation. * **A Visit to a Floating Village:** Anchor near Koh Panyee in Phang Nga Bay and visit the remarkable village built entirely on stilts. It’s a fascinating glimpse into a unique way of life that has existed for generations, adapted perfectly to the marine environment. * **Sunset at Baba Nest:** Arrange for a visit to the iconic rooftop bar at Sri Panwa in Phuket. It offers an almost unbelievable 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding islands and the Andaman Sea, widely considered one of the world's most beautiful sunset spots. * **Rock Climbing in Railay:** For the adventurous, your yacht can anchor off Railay Beach while you are guided by experts to scale the limestone cliffs, rewarded with an unparalleled perspective of the bay below. ## Culture and Cuisine: A Feast for the Senses Thailand's rich cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with Theravada Buddhism, which instills a sense of peace, respect, and grace in daily life. You'll see this in the gentle 'wai' greeting (a polite bow with hands pressed together), the ornate temples (wats) that dot the landscape, and the reverence for the monarchy. Your crew can arrange for respectful visits to key cultural sites, such as the Big Buddha in Phuket, providing insight into the spiritual heart of the nation. Thai cuisine, an integral part of the charter experience, is a masterful balancing act of four key flavors: sour, sweet, salty, and spicy. Your private chef is a master of this art. A typical day's menu might begin with a tropical fruit platter of mangosteen, rambutan, and dragon fruit. Lunch could be a light and zesty pomelo salad with prawns (Yum Som O) or a fragrant chicken and coconut soup (Tom Kha Gai). Dinner is a multi-dish affair: perhaps a rich Massaman curry, a whole steamed fish with lime and chili (Pla Neung Manao), and stir-fried morning glory (Pad Pak Boong), all tailored precisely to your preferred spice level. Sourcing ingredients from local markets and fresh-off-the-boat seafood from passing fishermen, your chef creates a culinary journey that is as spectacular as the scenery. ## Marinas and Yachting Infrastructure Thailand's status as a premier yachting hub is supported by a network of world-class marina facilities, particularly around Phuket. These are not merely functional docks but luxury lifestyle destinations in their own right, providing safe harborage, expert technical support, and premium amenities for superyachts. * **Ao Po Grand Marina:** Located on Phuket's sheltered east coast with 24-hour access, it's a popular starting point for charters heading into Phang Nga Bay. It boasts extensive capacity for superyachts, excellent facilities, and on-site restaurants and bars. * **Yacht Haven Marina:** Situated in the tranquil northeast of Phuket, this is another premier superyacht marina known for its stunning views, professional service, and excellent 'The Deck' restaurant, a favorite gathering spot for captains and crew. * **Royal Phuket Marina:** A high-end marina with a Mediterranean feel, it features luxurious waterfront residences, boutique shopping, fine dining, and state-of-the-art facilities. Its lock system provides ultimate protection from the elements. This robust infrastructure ensures that every technical and provisioning need can be met with efficiency and excellence, providing peace of mind and a seamless charter experience from start to finish. ## Planning Your Thai Charter Planning is the key to perfection. Your Blue Ocean Club charter specialist will handle every detail, but here are a few points to consider. Book well in advance, especially for the peak Christmas and New Year period during the November-April Dry Season. Be aware that National Park fees are applicable for visiting areas like the Similan Islands or Ang Thong Marine Park, which your APA will cover. A spirit of adventure and a willingness to immerse yourself in a new culture will be your most valuable assets. Let go of preconceived plans and allow your captain to guide you to a hidden cove they discovered last week, or follow the scent of frangipani to a local festival on a small island. This is where the magic of a Thai charter truly lies—in the spontaneous, beautiful moments that happen between the planned destinations.

Anchorages

Best anchorages & bays in Thailand.

The protected coves, sandbanks and lagoons your captain will plot into your week.

Maya Bay, Phi Phi Leh

Now a protected and rejuvenated paradise, anchoring is no longer permitted inside the bay itself to preserve the coral. Yachts anchor outside, and guests can visit the iconic beach via a floating pier. The experience remains breathtaking, with pristine sand and water teeming with juvenile sharks.

Ao Chalong, Phuket

A large, well-protected bay on Phuket's southeast coast. While busy with local traffic, it serves as the official port of entry and is a practical and safe anchorage for clearing customs or as a staging point for charters. It's home to the famous Kan Eang @ Pier restaurant.

Railay Beach, Krabi

Anchoring off the west side of the Railay peninsula places you in front of a spectacular vista of towering cliffs and a beautiful sandy beach. It provides a front-row seat to magnificent sunsets and offers easy access to the rock climbing, restaurants, and bars of this unique, boat-only destination.

Koh Hong, Krabi

A stunning anchorage within the Than Bok Khorani National Park. The main attraction is the island's own 'hong'—a spectacular interior lagoon accessed by a narrow channel. The outer bay offers a beautiful beach and clear waters for snorkeling, making it a perfect day stop or a serene overnight spot.

Donald Duck Bay, Similan Islands

The most famous anchorage in the Similan Islands (Island No. 8), named for a rock formation that resembles the cartoon character. It's a stunningly beautiful cove with gin-clear water, white sand, and a trail leading to 'Sail Rock' for panoramic views of the archipelago. A truly iconic spot.

Local Insider Tips

Insider knowledge for your Thailand charter.

  • The 'wai' (a prayer-like gesture with a slight bow) is the traditional greeting. It's polite to return it, though a nod and a smile are also fine.
  • Always remove your shoes before entering a temple, home, or even some small shops.
  • Dress modestly when visiting temples: cover shoulders and knees. Your yacht will have appropriate attire if needed.
  • The head is considered the most sacred part of the body. Avoid touching anyone's head, even children's.
  • Feet are considered the lowest part of the body. Avoid pointing your feet at people, religious icons, or the King's image.
  • Bargaining is common in markets. Keep it light-hearted and do it with a smile ('sanuk'). This does not apply in upscale stores or restaurants.
  • Learn two essential words: 'Sawasdee' (can mean hello or goodbye) and 'Khop Khun' (thank you). Add 'khrap' if you are male and 'kha' if you are female for politeness.
  • King Bhumibol Adulyadej was deeply revered, and respect for the monarchy is paramount. Never make critical comments.
  • Drink bottled water. While the water on your yacht is potable, it's best practice when ashore.
  • Embrace 'Thai time'. Things can run at a more relaxed pace. Patience and a smile are your best tools.

A personal recommendation from Priya.

Hidden anchorage
Maya Bay, Phi Phi Leh
My hidden gem in Thailand is Maya Bay, Phi Phi Leh — drop the anchor mid-morning before the day-boats arrive and you'll have it almost to yourself. Late June and early September are my personal favourite weeks — warm water, lighter traffic, and the crews are at their sharpest. The 'wai' (a prayer-like gesture with a slight bow) is the traditional greeting. It's polite to return it, though a nod and a smile are also fine.

Questions

Thailand yacht charter FAQs.

What is the absolute best time to charter a yacht in Thailand?+
For the prime cruising grounds of the Andaman Sea (Phuket, Phang Nga Bay, Krabi, Phi Phi), the best time is during the dry season from November to April. During this period, you can expect calm seas, clear skies, and comfortable temperatures. It is also the only season when the world-class Similan and Surin Islands are open to visitors. Conversely, if you plan to charter during the summer months (May to October), the Gulf of Thailand (around Koh Samui) is the better choice, as it is sheltered from the southwest monsoon and enjoys much better weather than the Andaman side.
Do I need a visa for a Thailand yacht charter?+
For many nationalities, including those from the USA, UK, Australia, and most of Europe, Thailand grants a visa exemption for tourist visits of up to 30 days when arriving by air. However, regulations can change. It is crucial to verify the specific visa requirements for your nationality with your local Thai embassy or consulate well in advance of your trip. Your Blue Ocean Club charter specialist can provide general guidance, but cannot give official visa advice. We recommend checking at the time of booking and again closer to your departure date.
Is it safe to swim and snorkel in the waters?+
Yes, the waters in Thailand are generally very safe, warm, and inviting for swimming and snorkeling. The country boasts some of the world's most beautiful and vibrant underwater ecosystems. However, it's wise to take sensible precautions. Be aware of seasonal jellyfish, which can occasionally be present; your crew will be knowledgeable about local conditions. Always snorkel with a buddy, be mindful of currents in certain channels, and listen to the advice of your experienced captain and crew who know the local waters and potential hazards intimately.
What is APA and how does it work in Thailand?+
APA stands for Advanced Provisioning Allowance. It is a standard practice in the yachting industry worldwide, including Thailand. Typically, it is a percentage (around 30-35%) of your charter fee, which is paid in advance. This amount is given to the captain to act as an onboard bank account to cover all your variable expenses during the charter. This includes fuel, food, beverages, marina fees, national park fees, customs, and any other expenses you incur. The captain is required to keep a meticulous, transparent account of all expenditures, which you can review at any time. At the end of the charter, you will be presented with a final account, and any remaining funds will be refunded to you.
My group has specific dietary needs. Can the chef accommodate this?+
Absolutely. One of the highlights of a luxury charter is the personalized culinary experience. Before your charter, you will complete a detailed preference sheet covering all dietary requirements, allergies, and personal tastes for your entire group. Your private chef will then craft a bespoke menu tailored specifically to your needs. Thai cuisine is incredibly versatile, and yacht chefs are highly skilled at accommodating everything from gluten-free and vegan diets to children's menus and specific spice-level preferences, ensuring every meal is a delight.
